GoCardless vs Synci: which layer do you need?
GoCardless Bank Account Data supplies account information through an API. Synci builds a managed financial-data product on upstream providers, including GoCardless. Both offer APIs, but their setup and responsibilities are different.

Synci uses upstream bank providers
Synci uses GoCardless as one of its upstream providers. Choosing Synci changes how you manage and use your bank data; it does not create an independent route around every GoCardless or bank limitation. Bank availability, consent renewal, history depth, and request limits still apply.
The added product layer includes managed connections, normalized account and transaction data, rules, optional enrichment, account selection, API access, and destinations such as SimpleFIN and MCP.
Choose direct GoCardless access when…
You already have access, your integration works, and you want to own the application around the account-information API. Direct access can be the right architectural choice when you need provider-specific behavior or do not need Synci’s destinations.
For a new account, verify availability first. Actual Budget’s documentation reports a stop to new Bank Account Data signups from July 2025; existing access is a separate case.
Choose Synci when…
Your task is to connect supported accounts and use their data in another tool. Synci already supplies the management layer, rules, and destination setup. You still choose what is shared, reconnect when consent expires, and account for upstream availability.
For a custom application, compare the Synci API’s actual fields and access model before deciding. The presence of an API on both products does not make them interchangeable.
Questions and answers
- Is Synci always the better choice?
- No. Direct provider access is appropriate when you need control over the integration or have an existing implementation that works. Synci is useful when managed connections and ready-made destinations solve the work you would otherwise build.
- Can Synci offer more history than the bank exposes?
- No. Initial history and account availability depend on the bank and provider. Synci’s plan and destination limits also apply.
