European open banking

European open-banking providers, without the guesswork

Start with five providers relevant to European account data: GoCardless, Enable Banking, Tink, Salt Edge, and Plaid. Then decide whether you need to integrate an API yourself or use a managed product such as Synci to connect the data to your tools.

The first five providers to understand

Compare like with like

Provider totals and headline features cannot answer these questions for a particular application. A short proof of concept with the accounts you need is more useful than assuming every supported bank behaves identically.

  • Coverage: check the exact country, bank entity, account type, and data product.
  • Access: establish whether your project can obtain production access under the current terms.
  • Setup: include credentials, consent, callbacks, storage, and reconnection in the estimate.
  • Data: test history, pending transactions, currencies, and balance timestamps.
  • Destination: decide whether you want to build an integration or use one already available.

Where Synci belongs in the comparison

Synci is the managed connection and destination layer. It uses upstream providers including GoCardless and adds user-facing management, account selection, transaction rules, optional enrichment, and several ways to consume the data.

For AI assistants, that route is read-only MCP access. For Actual Budget and other compatible apps, it can be SimpleFIN. For custom applications, Synci provides its own API. These are reasons to choose a managed product, not evidence that every direct API is a worse choice.

Read current setup requirements

Provider products and signup policies change. The linked profiles include source documentation and an explicit verification date. Actual Budget currently reports a GoCardless new-account restriction and describes its Enable Banking integration as experimental. Existing integrations should be evaluated separately from new setups.

Questions and answers

Which provider is best for a personal project?
The answer depends on your banks, production access, and how much integration work you want to own. Choose a direct API for provider-level control or evaluate a managed product when you want usable data and existing destinations.
Does Synci use all the providers listed here?
No. This is an ecosystem guide, not a list of Synci integrations. Synci’s upstream relationship with GoCardless is identified explicitly; inclusion of another provider does not imply a partnership.
