Bank sync for Firefly III in Europe & New Zealand

Import your bank transactions and balances into Firefly III through the SimpleFIN support built into its Data Importer.

Why Synci

Does Firefly III work with European banks?

Firefly III never talks to your bank itself. The separate Data Importer does, and for Europe that meant GoCardless, which is shifting away from its bank account data product. Enable Banking and FinTS are listed in the docs but are not supported by the importer yet, which leaves SimpleFIN as the route that actually works today. The catch is that the usual SimpleFIN sources only cover US and Canadian institutions.

Synci closes that gap by acting as a SimpleFIN source for Europe and New Zealand. Link your bank once through its own regulated open-banking login, hand the Data Importer a Synci setup token, and it imports through the SimpleFIN support it has shipped with since v1.7.0. There is no community import script to install and nothing to keep patched. Synci supports 2,900+ banks across 32 countries; find yours below.

Firefly III docs: importing from SimpleFIN

Features

Firefly III

  • Works with any Firefly III install: Docker, bare metal, or a managed host
  • Uses the SimpleFIN support built into the official Data Importer, not a community script
  • Map each shared account to a new or existing Firefly III asset account
  • Import on demand, or on the schedule you already run the importer on
  • Read-only access limited to the accounts you choose to share

Prerequisites

What you need before you start

Two moving parts on the Firefly III side, both of which you may already have running, plus the token Synci hands you.

The Data Importer, v1.7.0 or later

SimpleFIN landed in the importer in June 2025. Anything older will not offer it as an import source, so pull the current image before you begin.

API access to Firefly III

The importer reaches Firefly III over its API, so it needs a Personal Access Token or a Client ID, plus FIREFLY_III_URL (and VANITY_URL on Docker).

A Synci setup token

Generated on the SimpleFIN destination in Synci. It is one-time and valid for 7 days, and the importer exchanges it for a long-lived access URL the first time it runs.

Nothing here requires exposing Firefly III to the internet. The importer only needs to reach your Firefly III instance and Synci.

Setup

Setting up Firefly III

The Data Importer runs alongside Firefly III as its own container or install. If you already import CSVs with it, this is the same tool with a different source selected.

Step 01

Connect securely

Log in through your bank's own PSD2 flow. Synci never sees or stores your credentials.

Step 02

Pick accounts

Choose which accounts Synci exposes over SimpleFIN, then copy the one-time setup token it shows you.

Step 03

Give the importer the token

Set it as SIMPLEFIN_TOKEN in the Data Importer's .env or Docker environment, or paste it when the importer asks for connection details.

Step 04

Select and import

Pick the accounts to import, let the importer create or map the matching Firefly III asset accounts, then run the import whenever you want fresh data.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Yes, natively. SimpleFIN has been a first-class import source in the official Data Importer since v1.7.0, released in June 2025, and it is documented on docs.firefly-iii.org. You do not need the community firefly-iii-simplefin-importer project to make this work.

No. Synci is the SimpleFIN source in this setup. SimpleFIN Bridge covers US and Canadian banks; if your accounts are in Europe or New Zealand, Synci replaces it rather than sitting behind it, and you only ever hold one setup token.

Only if you already have GoCardless API access. GoCardless is moving away from the bank account data product the importer relies on, and the Firefly III docs now keep those instructions purely for existing users. That is the main reason European Firefly III users are moving to SimpleFIN.

No. Firefly III matches on the transaction identifiers the importer passes through, so running the import again updates what it already has instead of adding it twice. When your bank later books a transaction that was pending, it is updated in place.

Yes. Save the import configuration, then use the Data Importer's autoimport endpoint from cron or a scheduled container the way you would for any other source. Synci keeps fetching from your bank in the background, so each run picks up whatever arrived since the last one.

Around 90 days for most banks. PSD2 sets what an institution has to hand over and the exact window varies, with some banks offering considerably more. Anything older is best imported once from a CSV export.

All 2,900+ institutions Synci supports across 32 countries in Europe and New Zealand, from the large retail banks to regional and challenger banks. Use the search above to check yours.

Every 30 to 360 minutes depending on your plan. SimpleFIN apps pull rather than receive, so Firefly III sees whatever Synci last fetched at the moment you run a sync.

No. Synci connects through regulated Open Banking APIs and authentication happens in your bank's own login flow. Neither Synci nor Firefly III ever sees your credentials.

Yes. Edit the shared accounts on the SimpleFIN destination in Synci at any time, and the change takes effect the next time Firefly III syncs. Deleting the destination revokes access immediately.
