GoCardless Bank Account Data, explained
GoCardless Bank Account Data is an account information API with roots in Nordigen. Developers use it to retrieve bank accounts, balances, and transactions. Synci uses GoCardless as an upstream provider and adds a managed product for connecting that data to apps and AI assistants.

What does GoCardless provide?
Bank Account Data exposes bank information through authenticated API endpoints. It is separate from GoCardless’s payment collection products: access to transactions does not itself initiate a payment.
The service documents European account information access. Check the exact institution and account type before designing around it; history depth, consent duration, and request limits can differ between banks.
What happened to Nordigen?
GoCardless acquired Nordigen in 2022. If an older tutorial refers to Nordigen bank sync, follow the current Bank Account Data documentation rather than assuming the old signup flow still applies.

Can new users sign up?
Actual Budget’s documentation says new Bank Account Data accounts stopped being accepted in July 2025, while existing accounts should continue working. This is a notice about that signup route, not a claim that GoCardless has shut down its API or payment products. Confirm your own eligibility with GoCardless.
What a direct integration involves
- Obtain provider access and credentials, then implement token handling on your server.
- Let users select a bank, complete consent, and return to your application.
- Retrieve the permitted accounts, balances, and transactions; handle rate limits, failures, and reconnection.
- Build the storage, transaction cleanup, and destination integration your product needs.
When to use the API, and when to use Synci
Direct access fits a team that already has provider access and wants to build its own bank-data product. It gives you responsibility for the application around the API.
Synci fits someone who wants to connect their accounts and use them in supported destinations. It adds connection management, normalized data, rules, optional enrichment, account selection, SimpleFIN, MCP, and a separate Synci API. It does not remove the upstream bank’s limits or replace GoCardless’s connectivity network.
Questions and answers
- Is Synci a different bank connectivity network?
- No. Synci uses upstream providers, including GoCardless. The difference is the managed connection and destination layer around that connectivity.
- Should an existing GoCardless user migrate?
- Not necessarily. If your current integration works and meets your needs, the signup notice alone is not a reason to replace it. Compare the maintenance work and destination features you actually need.
